Home battery storage has gone from a niche product to one of the most in-demand energy solutions in Sweden. With rising electricity prices and more solar panel installations, more homeowners want to take control of their energy — and a home battery does just that. In this guide, we cover everything you need to know to make an informed decision.

What is home battery storage?

A home battery stores electricity that you either produce yourself via solar panels or purchase from the grid when the price is low. You then use the stored electricity when the price is high or when the sun isn't shining.

  • Stores surplus electricity from your solar panels instead of selling it back to the grid at a low price
  • Can be charged from the grid during off-peak hours (e.g. at night)
  • Delivers electricity to your home during peak hours or during power outages
  • Most systems use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) with 10–15 year warranties

Why get battery storage

There are several reasons to invest in battery storage. Here are the most important:

Lower your electricity costs

By charging the battery when electricity is cheap and using the stored energy when the price is high, you can save SEK 10,000–25,000 per year. With hourly pricing (spot pricing) and grid support services (frequency regulation), the savings potential is even greater.

Maximize your solar panels

Without a battery, you often export surplus electricity to the grid at a low price. With a battery, you store that electricity instead and use it in the evening — when your household actually needs it. From 2026, the microproduction tax credit (60 öre/kWh) has been removed, making self-consumption more important than ever.

Backup during power outages

Many modern battery systems can function as emergency power during outages. You can keep essential appliances running — lighting, refrigerator, internet — until power is restored.

Earn money with grid services

Your home battery can participate in grid support services (frequency regulation) and become part of a virtual power plant. This means you get paid for stabilizing the grid — fully automatically via your battery provider's platform. Revenue varies, but SEK 6,000–18,000 per year is realistic for a 10 kW system.

Price: what affects the cost?

The price for a complete battery storage system varies depending on capacity, brand and installation complexity. Here's an overview:

With the green tax deduction you get 48.5% off (max SEK 50,000 per person) when the battery is installed together with solar panels. A system costing SEK 130,000 would then cost approximately SEK 67,000 after the deduction.

V2G – Vehicle to Grid

Vehicle to Grid (V2G) is a technology where your electric car's battery doesn't just receive electricity — it can also send power back to your home or the grid. The technology is still in its pilot phase in Sweden, but Vattenfall and Volkswagen have been running a large-scale pilot in Hudiksvall since 2025 with 200 cars and bidirectional chargers. Commercial launch is expected during 2026.

An average electric car has a battery of 50–80 kWh — that's 3–8 times larger than a typical home battery. When V2G technology becomes widely available, your car could potentially power your entire house for over a day.

Power (kW) vs capacity (kWh)

Two key figures you'll always encounter when choosing a battery:

Power (kW)

How much electricity the battery can deliver simultaneously. Think of it as the water flow from a tap. High power = more appliances can run at the same time.

Capacity (kWh)

How much electricity the battery can store in total. Think of it as the size of the water tank. High capacity = longer running time before recharging.

A battery with 5 kW power and 10 kWh capacity can deliver 5 kW for two hours, or 2.5 kW for four hours. Choose based on your household's needs.

Installation — indoors or outdoors

Where you place your battery depends on available space, climate and the type of system you choose:

  • Indoors (garage, utility room): Most common in Sweden. Protected from weather and extreme temperatures.
  • Outdoors (wall-mounted): Possible with IP65-rated systems. Requires protection from direct sunlight and frost.
  • The actual installation normally takes 1 day, but expect 2–3 months total (lead time, grid application and approval).
  • Make sure to choose an installer with experience with your specific battery brand — always a certified electrician.

Expanding battery storage over time

A major advantage of modern battery systems is that they are modular. You can start with a smaller capacity and expand gradually. Most manufacturers — such as Huawei, BYD, Growatt and Sungrow — offer stackable modules that can easily be added to the existing system. This means you can adjust your investment to fit your budget and needs, without having to replace the entire system.
